The post-weaning period is critical for health and technical performance of piglets. Most piglets will first develop non-infectious, malabsorptive diarrhea due to the changes in diet and other stressors. Opportunistic pathogens can take advantage of this decreased state of health such as E. Coli.

Antibiotics and zinc oxide are used to treat digestive and respiratory diseases. However, the benefits of preventing diarrhea in pigs do not outweigh the significant environmental risks. This paper focuses on treating post-weaning diarrhea, without the use of zinc oxide, by improving overall biosecurity and hygiene management.
