In the poultry industry, hygiene is the key to success. With the introduction of HyCare within the hatchery sector, we stand on the brink of significant change. This innovation not only raises hygiene standards but also offers practical, cost-effective solutions to the challenges faced by hatcheries today. Tom Klein Zieverink from The Schippers Group shares his journey through the world of hatchery hygiene, a path that led to the development of HyCare Hatchery.

Initiative by Tom Klein Zieverink: A Revelation in Hygiene
"When I started my research, I was surprised by the varying hygiene standards," says Klein Zieverink. Many hatcheries believed their hygiene level was optimal, but in-depth inspections often revealed significant shortcomings. This was often not intentional but caused by operational blindness. HyCare ensures not only an improvement in the cleaning process but also a change in the mentality surrounding hygiene.

The Role of HyCare: More than Just Cleaning
HyCare's advanced approach goes beyond cleaning; it also optimizes internal and external biosecurity. By using tools such as ATP measurements and the HyCheck app, HyCare can not only accurately assess cleaning activities but also improve them. This has led to higher hygiene standards in hatcheries, resulting directly in the following benefits:

1. Improved hygiene scores:: By collaborating with HyCare, hatcheries can significantly improve their scores in programs such as the IKB Egg and IKB Chicken Programs. This is made possible by working closely with staff to raise hygiene standards and achieve more consistent results.
2. Prevention of disease introduction: HyCare plays a crucial role in preventing the introduction and spread of pathogens in the hatchery. By following hygiene protocols and minimizing cross-contamination between 'clean' and 'dirty' zones in the hatchery, the risk of contamination is significantly reduced. This is further strengthened by practical solutions such as the use of color-coding systems and physical barriers.
3. Higher chick quality and productivity: By maintaining a germ-free environment, a HyCare hatchery produces healthier chicks. This leads to higher chick survival rates and improves overall hatchery productivity.
4. Cost savings through efficiency: With HyCare, processes are not only more hygienic but also more efficient. This results in significant cost savings, mainly through reduced losses and improved overall operations.

Future Plans of HyCare: A Healthy Chain
Currently, The Schippers Group is actively involved in establishing four HyCare Hatcheries. "With 80% of hatchery operations being fairly uniform, we can quickly make significant improvements," explains Klein Zieverink. "For the remaining 20%, which mainly concerns the unique characteristics of individual hatcheries such as building types and layouts, we offer tailor-made solutions."

Implementing HyCare is a simple yet crucial step for hatcheries. "It's mostly about a mental shift and small adjustments to existing practices," emphasizes Klein Zieverink. This approach aims to standardize optimal hygiene throughout the entire sector. "My vision is clear: a poultry chain where optimal hygiene is the standard. HyCare is the key to realizing this vision," he concludes.

Don't you want to move forward too?
Progressive hatchery owners choose HyCare as an integral part of their business strategy, not just as a hygiene protocol. Are you ready to take the step towards a more efficient, healthier, and sustainable future? Contact Tom Klein Zieverink today for a detailed plan on how HyCare can be implemented in your hatchery.

Closing Thought from Tom Klein Zieverink
"In a world where standards for animal welfare and food safety are constantly evolving, HyCare is more than an option; it's a necessary step forward. By embracing HyCare, hatcheries not only demonstrate their commitment to quality but also their leadership in the future of the poultry industry."
