Good drinking water cannot be taken for granted, but it is a crucial basic condition for healthy livestock farming. Reduced water quality leads to production damage, such as more diseases, reduced growth, lower milk yield and poorer feed utilization. Good quality drinking water is essential for healthy chickens and chicks. Not only at the source, but also where the animals absorb the water, at the nipple. Healthy drinking water is not only important for an optimal operating result it also contributes to healthier animals. Water plays an important role in regulating body temperature and digestion.
Water is an important part of healthy nutrition. If pigs have poor water available to them, they will eat less. In addition to better feed intake and therefore better growth, water plays a much bigger role. For example, it is known that the litters of sows with a high water intake during pregnancy are significantly heavier at birth, corrected for the total number of piglets born. Colostrum production is also higher, resulting in better piglet starts.
A high yielding cow drinks at least 150 liters of water and on a hot day can drink as much as 200 liters of water per day. This is not surprising when you consider that milk consists of 87% water. In addition, they drink very quickly, within a minute they can drink up to twenty liters of water. Water is a basic requirement for the absorption of dry matter (feed) and the water intake therefore has a direct relationship with milk production. Doing everything possible to ensure a good drinking water intake in your dairy cattle is just as important as stimulating the feed intake.
